What is Ambunu?

Ambunu is a plant found throughout Africa, traditionally used as food and medicinally for centuries. Its botanical name is ceratotheca sesamoides and it is also referred to as false sesame. Many people liken the smell of dried ambunu leaves to green tea. The word Ambunu comes from the country of Chad, but this plant is know locally by different names in different parts of Africa including Eku (Yoruba Nigeria), Bungu (Northern Nigeria), Tchaba-laba (Guinea Bissau), and Lalu-caninho(Senegal)(1).

Research shows, Ambunu has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties as it is rich in flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids, tannins, and phenols (1). The high amounts of saponins give this herb its cleansing properties. Ambunu leaves are also a good source of fiber, protein, potassium, calcium, and carotene(2). Ambunu is purported to have several health benefits for hair, though I could not find any research articles to support these claims. However there are several people and youtubers who stand by these claims.  Personally after watching several videos with people using Ambunu in their hair  I see the results are quite amazing. Purported benefits of using Ambunu for your hair include:

1. Cleanses : Ambunu can be used as a pre-poo or as a shampoo
2. Eases detangling: adds much slip to the hair, so detangling is a breeze
3. Moisturizes and conditions the hair 
4. Strengthens and thickens hair
5. Prevents hair breakage
6: Prevents dry scalp

How Do You Use Ambunu For Hair Growth

Every individuals hair growth formula is different due to difference's in hair texture and thickness. With that said it's important to figure out what works for you by trying different things. So Ambunu leaves are definitely something you should try for hair growth with all of its purported benefits and rave reviews. The key for hair growth is consistency. In order for Ambunu to work for you, you must consistently use it in your hair care routine as a detangler, conditioner or shampoo.

What you will need

1. Ambunu leaves or Ambunu powder

  • Most people who use ambunu use the whole leaves and some blend the leaves using a bullet blender to make their own ambunu powder. I have not seen anyone actually start store bought with ambunu powder, though it still is an option. You will use the leaves to make an Ambunu gel similar to the consistency of aloe vera gel to apply to your hair. 

2. Cheese cloth or Wig cap for straining

3. 2 Large Measuring Cups or Bowls

4. Applicator bottle and funnel *optional

Steps To Use Ambunu Leaves For Hair Growth With No Mess

1. Take 1-4 tablespoons of ambunu leaves and add to 8ounces or 1 cup of hot water in a bowl. *If using ambunu powder add the powder to the water instead. The more ambunu leaves you use the thicker a consistency gel you will produce. Try it with different amounts to see what works best for your hair.

2. Let the ambunu leaves sit in the water for 20-30 minutes.

3. Stir with your hands or spoon to aid the process of the gel coming out of the leaves.

4. At this point some people add the ambunu leaves water to their hair but its very messy and can be difficult to wash all the leaves out your hair.

5. Instead, strain the leaves into a measuring cup using your cheese cloth or new unused wig cap.

6. Make sure you really squeeze the leaves while straining to get as much gel out as possible. 

7. You will see thick golden/orange gel come out, this is the Ambunu gel to be used as a detangler, conditioner or shampoo. The next step is optional, but will make using Ambunu easier without any mess.

8. Using a funnel pour the Ambunu gel in to an applicator bottle.


How To Use Ambunu as a Leave In Conditioner and Mosturizer

Wash your hair as you normally do. Add the ambunu gel to your hair in sections and style as desired. See video below. 


How To Use Ambunu as a Detangler and Shampoo

Add the ambunu gel to your hair in sections. Its recommended to use a detangling brush instead of comb to get maximal curl definition. Immediately as you add the ambunu gel to your hair you will notice so much slip and your hair will instantly detangle. To use as shampoo massage through all of your hair and scalp once detangling is complete and simply wash off, thats it. Your hair will be clean!
