What Is BMR?
Basal metabolic rate(BMR) is now used interchangeably with the term resting metabolic rate(RMR). Both terms refer to the energy(calories) required for the maintenance of normal body functions and homeostasis. So when people talk about metabolism they are essentially referring to BMR. BMR on average makes up about 75% of your total calorie needs in any given day depending on how active or inactive you are. In an extremely inactive person, BMR could make up to 90% of one's calorie needs in a day.
Your total calorie need in a day is determined by your TDEE or total daily calorie expenditure. TDEE=BMR+TEE+TEF. TEF refers to the thermic effect of food, which pertains to calories burned while eating and digesting food. TEE refers to the thermic effect of exercises, which pertains to calories burned through exercise or any physical activity.
How To Calculate BMR for Weight loss?
To calculate your daily calorie need, nutritionists use a complicated math equation. I've done the work for you by creating a simple calculator below. Just put in your weight height and age then click calculate to get your BMR instantly. Once you get your BMR you must add your total exercise expenditure TEE to come up with an approximate TDEE.
For example: To calculate (maintenance calories)TDEE for a 30-year-old woman who weighs 175 pounds, is 5 foot 6 inches, and workouts 2x/week only 30 mins. 5 foot 6 inches tall is equal to 66 inches. So in the formula below, I input 175 for weight, 66 for height, and 30 for age. The BMR is calculated to be 1585 calories. Because she only works out twice a week this would be considered a light activity level. I multiply her BMR 1585x1.375 so her TDEE would equal 2179 calories. Now I have her daily maintenance calories, I simply subtract 500 calories to find calories needed in a day to lose weight. So if this 30-year-old woman wanted to lose 1 lb a week without increasing her exercise she should eat no more than 2179-500 = 1679 calories a day.
